What is Naturopathy ? How can it help me?

Tell us a bit about yourself and your business:

My name is Maddy and I’m a Clinical Naturopath, Holistic Nutritionist, Wife, Mother and the Owner of Your Unique Matter. I live and work from my home clinic in Killcare on the Central Coast of NSW. Your Unique Matter is all about individualised medicine and supporting each client with their unique health matters, using natural, holistic and evidence based medicine.

What actually is Naturopathy and what does it entail?

Naturopathy is one of many Complementary Medicine modalities. As a Naturopath I follow six guiding principles when supporting a client with their health:

First Do No Harm ~ I utilise the most natural, least invasive therapies during treatment.

The Healing Power of Nature ~ My treatment approaches use natural substances such as herbal medicine, food, nutrients and time in nature to encourage the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself and return to homeostasis.

Identify and Treat the Cause ~ While providing relief from your symptoms I am also focusing on treating the underlying cause of the health condition. This also involves removing any obstacles or drivers that might prevent healing or are making the symptom/ condition worse.

Doctor as Teacher ~ Educating clients about their health so they understand WHY they are experiencing ill health. It’s the best way to stay healthy long-term by understanding how you can support your own health. This is a big one and part of the reason why it's best to have regular consults with me to begin with.

Treat the Whole Person ~ I have a deep appreciation and believe that one's physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health are interconnected. I also take into account the environment and lifestyle of clients, as these affect overall health and wellbeing.

Prevention ~ I like to look at a client’s medical history and family history to identify potential imbalances that may increase their risk of developing health problems. By optimising overall health we can prevent illness and suffering where possible.

What are you most passionate about supporting women with?

Vaginal health matters! I work on supporting the vaginal microbiome which ultimately means I also support hormones, immunity, stress adaptation, digestive function and basically work toward the optimal functioning of the entire body. It's all connected!

Why are you most passionate about supporting women with vaginal health?

I’m most passionate about vaginal health because I have experienced chronic and recurrent vaginal health matters for a good portion of my life. I understand the frustrations of being told that nothing is wrong and the mental and emotional implications from being chronically sick. Thankfully with the help of Naturopathic Medicine, Acupuncture and other complementary medicine modalities, I was able to heal and go on to conceive, carry and birth my daughter naturally without any vaginal health complaints. This is why I love supporting women with vaginal health matters, it’s more than just vaginal health, its overall health and wellbeing.

What are some common women’s health concerns you see in the clinic?

The most common women’s health matters I see in my clinic revolve around vaginal infections, irritations and inflammation. Along with a range of women's hormonal issues such as menstrual cycle irregularities, PMS, acne and supporting women through menopause, just to name a few. Of course because I treat holistically, I am often supporting a combination of health concerns all at once. That might look like someone with chronic vaginal thrush, depression, bloating, constipation, fatigue and an irregular menstrual cycle. The beauty of Naturopathic Medicine is that I focus on treating the person in front of me, like they are a study of one. We are all unique and that's how I like to treat :)
